Review: Sunday Mercury

Since scooping the BBC Young Folk Award in 2003, this extraordinary trio have picked up plaudits for their boundary-busting mix of folk and pop.

Their sophomore set finds Anna Esslemont and Cormac Byrne joined by Coventry guitarist Kevin Dempsey, once of Whippersnapper, and it's an absolute delight.

Listen particularly for Dempsey's dark and delicate showcase in Ceol Aine, and the way he adds a dynamic new dimension to the fiddle and bodhran jousts. It's Esslemont's vocals, however, that haunt the likes of America.

For the uninitiated, Uiscedwr is pronounced ish-ka-dooer - and it's Irish for Water.
